Ultrasound therapy

Ultrasound therapy is a treatment within the framework of electrotherapy. It uses sound waves to generate heat in the tissue. Ultrasound therapy is intended to relieve pain from joint and spinal disorders.
The physiotherapist first coats the body region to be treated with a special ultrasound gel. This creates an optimal connection between the skin and the ultrasound head - even small layers of air between the ultrasound head and the body surface would prevent the transmission of the surge waves. Alternatively, the ultrasound treatment can also be carried out in a water bath.
During the treatment, the therapist moves the ultrasound head over the body region to be treated. The sound waves are emitted by the device either continuously (constant sound) or in pulses (pulsed sound). They penetrate up to five centimeters deep into the tissue. In addition, the ultrasound treatment results in a so-called micro-massage.

What is it good for?

  • chronic pain in the tendon attachments due to wear or incorrect loading (tendinosis)
  • injury to ligaments, tendons and bursae
  • bone wall formation (periostosis)
  • superficial arthrosis (joint wear)
  • delayed bone healing after bone fractures
  • soft tissue injuries due to accidents (bruises, sprains)
  • spinal syndrome (collective term for acute or chronic pain that is usually caused by muscles, intervertebral discs and/or vertebral joints and is associated with functional disorders in the spine area - possibly involving arms and/or legs)
  • rheumatic diseases
  • chronic inflammatory diseases

Ultrasound therapy is usually used as a supplementary measure, for example in combination with physiotherapy.

You can have ultrasound therapy prescribed by your doctor or you can book it as a personal service and pay for it yourself.
