Cryotherapy

Cryotherapy (CT) is a local heat removal through a short-term application of ice, which has an analgesic and anti-inflammatory effect, reduces the leakage of fluid from blood and lymph vessels and has a positive effect on painful muscle tension. The cold causes blood vessels to constrict and blood flow to the skin to decrease. This reduces inflammatory reactions in the cooled area and slows down cell metabolism.
Depending on the duration of the application, the cold reaches the skin, the underlying tissue, muscles or joints. A short-term cold treatment lasts between 3 and 5 minutes, a long-term cold treatment longer than 5 minutes.
It can be carried out with interruptions over several hours in order to reach the deeper layers of tissue. For the cold treatment, ice bags filled with ice cubes and a little water, cryopacks or ice-cold terry towels that have been dipped in salt water and frozen at -15 °C are used. An ice rubdown is possible with ice cubes; Individual body parts can also be immersed in an ice water bath, an ice-water mixture that has a temperature of around 1 °C.
