CMD is a disorder of the chewing apparatus and the muscles surrounding it.
The chewing apparatus essentially consists of the jaw joint and the associated chewing muscles. It is located in the immediate vicinity of the uppermost (head) joints of the cervical spine.
Disorders in this area are usually caused by trauma, stress-related teeth grinding or a misalignment of the spine and/or jaw. CMD has a negative effect on the patient's posture and general well-being, among other things.
Treatment of CMD is carried out in cooperation between a dentist and a physiotherapist.
The dentist uses a special examination technique, the so-called functional analysis, to create an exact model of the affected person's teeth. Based on the results obtained in this way, a relief or corrective splint is fitted. However, such a splint can only influence the mechanical elements of the chewing system, such as the position of the teeth.
The physiotherapist's job is to mobilize the jaw joint using manual techniques and to detonize the associated muscles. The patient also receives an exercise program to do at home. In this way, the problem can be resolved as quickly as possible.
What is it good for?
• Pain and sensitivity of the chewing muscles and jaw joint
• Headaches
• Ear noises (e.g. tinnitus, hissing)
• Cracking
• Crepitus (grinding)
• Restricted movement of the jaw joint
